If you’re an avid fan of motorsports or if you have never been to a race in your life, you’re just as likely to enjoy a day at Summit Point Motorsports Park April 23-24 when the SCCA MARRS racing series returns to the Point for the 2010 season. MARRS attracts the best drivers and hundreds of race cars including very high horsepower American and European sports cars, purpose built open and closed wheel racing machines, as well as cars you will easily recognize (like Miatas). In all there will be nine groups of race cars participating in the weekend events.
Kopp Motorsports will arrive at Summit Point Thursday evening April 22. Friday is a test day for all MARRS participants. Official racing begins Saturday morning with qualifying. We participate in the Spec Miata (SM) class (the largest and certainly most competitive SCCA class). SM will race in group 2 meaning that qualifying Saturday will take place about 9:00 AM. After all the race groups have qualified each group will compete in a 20 minute, 10 lap sprint race – the first race should start just before, or immediately after the lunch break (noon to 1:00 PM). These races are wars and they are great fun watch. Given their short length, drivers must race all-out from the first turn and this makes for a lot of excitement.
The feature races (20 laps of the 2.0 mile Summit Point main circuit) are run on Sunday. Again, given SM is designated as group 2 this weekend, the SM race will be green flagged about 9:30 AM. Even if this is too early for you to get your butt to West Virginia, we’d love to see you and you can experience a full day of racing at Summit Point on either Saturday or Sunday, even if you arrive only in time for lunch :).

#46, piloted by Brazilian Ace Danyel Torres
and #44, driven by returning star Jedd Fahnestock.
If you can’t find us just ask the first person you see in the pits near a Miata. Everyone knows who we are. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the track.Summit Point is 1.5 hours from downtown DC just this side of Winchester, VA. (click here for directions). The motorsport complex contains three tracks (these are European style road courses, not ovals) and a great karting facility where you can test your own skills on a full scale kart racing circuit in FAST karts. A small admission price at the gate gives you access to all of Summit Point including the pit area.
See you at the races.
