The gods of New Jersey racing are not kind to Kopp Motorsports. Our second trip this season to New Jersey Motorsports Park ended with as much frustration as the first outing in July where we lost a spark plug wire with two laps to go while running comfortably in the lead Sunday.
This past weekend Kevin qualified the Piper Motorsport #6 car on the pole Saturday morning (as we had done in July), then won the Saturday afternoon sprint race (as we had done in July), and started on the pole for the important feature race Sunday (as we had done in July). With two laps to go, in the lead, the car sputtered and ran out of fuel. Kevin managed to coax and coast the car to a 7th place finish, but as we had done in July we kicked away a win.
Start of Sunday's race.
In the space of six weeks we have lost two opportunities to wrap-up the 2010 MARRS Championship through our own errors in New Jersey. Given the level of the competition in MARRS – Kenny Zalner, Scott Brunk, and Tim Jacobs to name a few – errors like the ones we have made are inexcusable. We have taken this hard lesson to heart and have turned it from frustration to motivation.
Kenny Zalner has now stepped out to a 90 Championship point lead over Kevin with three races remaining. The Championship is still in sight and is in our hands – we simply need to win the next three.
We want express our thanks to our technical partners – Piper Motorsport, King Rat Motorsports, D&R Racing and WBR Graphics for all their support and to OG Racing for their generous sponsorship. Also, thanks to our close friends at Brimtek Motorsports with whom we share good and bad times (and a beer or two).
